We are now stocking Madalynne x Simplicity bra sewing patterns. These patterns offer a range of lace bras with matching knickers, and they are all made using stretch lace backed on powernet. The pattern envelope calls for 8″(approx. 20.5cm) wide stretch double galloon lace (click here to read our guide to lace for lingerie making which runs through the terminology).
We’ve had several customers get in touch asking about what type of lace to use, as the extremely wide galloon lace specified on the pattern (20.5cm) is difficult to find. We currently stock 16cm wide galloon lace in teal and burnt sienna, and we had no problem cutting our sample bra in size 32B, which is Simplicity 8228 View A (halterneck bralette). If you feel unsure about the width of the lace, we recommend purchasing an extra metre so that you have some leeway with pattern placement and cutting.
Experienced bra-makers will have no problem finding substitutions, but we’re glad to offer some guidance to those just starting out. Some suggested alternatives include:
- Use slightly narrower double galloon stretch lace (such as our 16cm wide lace)
- Use stretch galloon lace with only a single scalloped border (but make sure you have extra)
- Use powernet, and finish the edges with picot-edged elastic
We’ve sourced the best bra making supplies in a range of colours which make it easy to match up all the different components. Here our sample uses teal stretch lace, kingfisher powernet, kingfisher elastic and kingfisher fastener.
Happy bra making!
